The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum Believes Character Counts!
As the Bedminster Group and our nation prepare for upcoming Veterans Day celebrations, we’d like to focus attention on a local institution that honors all Veterans, beginning with those from World War II.
The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Savannah, Georgia adopted and funded the Character Counts! program. Character Counts! is a non-denominational, nationwide program with documented success, based on emphasizing the importance of the six universally accepted traits that are critical to good character, and found in scores of Veterans as they protect and defend our nation: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
The Mighty Eighth partnered with the Chatham County School District in Savannah helping schools implement this program which will impact each student in a positive and meaningful way for a lifetime. Since the implementation of Character Counts! in 2009, Savannah area schools have seen a major improvement in the behavior of their students behind classroom doors and within the community.
Inside the Mighty Eighth Museum
The Museum funds teacher and staff training sessions and supplies, including posters used by educators and the district. Following training, teachers use their everyday lessons to encourage students to think critically about character and how good decision making can be applied to both their school and home life and in the “real world”.
Recently the Mighty Eighth partnered with local CBS affiliate WTOC to sponsor a Character Counts! Student of the Month. Students are nominated by their principals for displaying exceptional character and one student is selected monthly and featured in a WTOC news piece and in a display at the museum describing why this student was chosen.
The Bedminster Group was introduced to Character Counts! when making a donation to the Mighty Eighth Museum in memory of a client who was a Veteran and pilot. We wanted to make a donation in an area that would have been meaningful to him and reflect upon his goodness and we discovered that he embodied the very traits that Character Counts! promotes.
