Tails Are Wagging at the Beaufort County Animal Shelter
At Bedminster, our monthly contribution to a selected animal shelter is one way we support our homeless pet population, but another is to continually post news about animal welfare agencies in the Lowcountry. This month we selected, Beaufort County Animal Shelter & Control. The new shelter director seems to have made quite an impression on shelter residents and the community at large.
In March 2012 Tallulah Trice took the reigns as shelter director and immediately determined that adoptable pets should be sent to other organizations such as Hilton Head Humane Association and Palmetto Animal League giving these pets a second chance. Minimizing the BCAS&C population enables staff to continue taking on stray and relinquished animals and focus on their rehabilitation. She noted many of the animals euthanized, or adopted out and returned were due to behavioral or health problems. To counter this she plans to enhance animal education programs and adoption policies (i.e detailing the adoption application) so the shelter will see a decline in the return rate.
Tallulah has developed partnerships with various animal organizations in the community including Three Black Dogs, Camp Green Dog and Brooke’s Bed and Biscuit. Franny Gerthoffer, who does an outstanding job herself as Director of Hilton Head Humane Association, commends Tallulah for her work in the animal welfare community and feels it’s important to know that Tallulah has contacts throughout the East Coast with shelters that have a no-kill philosophy, and are in need of animals.
Most important, Tallulah Trice wants to tell local residents, if interested in adopting an animal from the county shelter, they will receive priority!
